Younger Day Hobbies:
Powerlifting
Was a competitve powerlifter on a National scale. Nationally ranked in 148lb class [weighed 142]. Best totals in competition:
bench: 350
squat: 440
deadlift: 520
total: 1310
My idea was to be the second man to ever bench 3x his own body weight [joe bradley did 396 at 132], however, an injury changed those plans.

Chess Player
Used to have a Master chess player ranking [2200 for those of you who know what that is].  Haven't played much the last 10 years but I'm sure I could give you a good game [my guess is I'm probably an expert level at around 2000.]

other stuff
played football, boxed AAU, etc

How Did I Become An NU Fan?
I moved to Chicago and because I was a Big10 fan I sought to buy tickets at NU so I could watch the OSU buckeyes every other year and also watch big10 football.  Amazingly at the time [1994 I believe], I asked for seats closest to the 50 and was told "ok, how many?".  I said, what? R U kiddn me?  She said no, not as long as I didn't mind sitting on the visiting side [east side] because they only had like 5,000 STH.  At any rate, I got hooked.
What hooked me?  First and foremost was that NU, the institution, decided to invest into its football program so that the Wildcats would have the resources needed to field a competitive football team and be worth my investment.  Sorry but I would have got no enjoyment pulling for NU if they were bigtime underdogs weekin and weekout.
However, Ryan Field became a great place for me to share time with my family. Also, the whole NU football community [players, fans, etc.] are a great bunch of people.  The players aren't a bunch of thugs but good model citizens, and the fans are fun people who behave responsibly even when they [we] drink.

Turk Tidbits:
Most interesting book I ever read [outside God's Word] was "Saving the Appearances" by Owen Barfield, a book on consciousness and knowlege.
